Machine: B&W G3/450/512MB/3x13GB hd (OS X, backup, Linux), PCI slots: SCSI card, extra NIC, and 6 port USB 2.0 card
I'm not even sure where to start, as every time I try the install of 6.06 it messes up at a different place. I installed the server version fine, it started up and ran perfectly. I wiped the drive and booted from the live CD and chose 'install.' I could get through all the dialog boxes and choose install, but partway through, i would get a message saying the installer crashed. This happened several times, then it began to just restart instead of giving me an error message. So I burned another copy and successfully used that copy to put 6.06 on a G4/400. I can't even boot on the G3 without errors, or hanging, or something. Last time it said "cannot allocate resources PCI something something" and sat all night.
What baffles me is that I did have the server version installed and working fine, so it's not linux-incapable. And I know this disc is good as I've used it before.
Just now, on bootup, it restarted on its own as it said 'loading hardware drivers.'
Any help?

Update: it got past the initial load screen and made the startup sounds, but then got this:
"The GNOME session manager (process 5913) has crashed due to a fatal error (segmentation fault). ahh!

Have you ruled out the ram or the processor? (I think I remember a thread about you having problems with two G3s and processors).

Good memory! Yes, this is one of the two, but it's the unmodified case and it runs os 9, X, and Ubuntu 6 server edition just perfectly.

What rev B&W is this?
Have you tried a different cd-rom drive? The one on my old B&W was playing up with Ubuntu discs, put another drive in and it was fine.

Try removing all unnecessary hardware devices and try again. I've never had a problem installing any of the versions of Ubuntu.

It's a rev 2, so I don't have to worry about the data corruption problems. I'll go ahead and pull all the PCI cards and other HDs and see if I can't get it to work. I'm just so confused because the server version on the same brand disc burned by the same burner on the same day worked fine...we'll see.

Okay, I pulled all three PCI cards and tried again. It booted successfully but after running through all the install options, it hung at 15% installing, which was Detecting File Systems. Like I said before, I have three ~13GB HDs in there, one of which is dedicated to Linux, like so:
IDE 1:
master: CD-ROM
slave: Backup
IDE 2:
master: Linux
slave: OS X

If I unhook the OS X and backup drives and set the CD-ROM and Linux drive jumpers to 'single,' will the bootloader still work after reconnecting them and reseting jumpers?

Alright, this time I disconnected both extra HD's so only the master drives existed on both ide busses, the CD-ROM and Linux HD. The initial setup went just fine, but once again it hung at 15%, detecting file systems. the installer then quit on its own. Help! Maybe i'll pull out a spare CD-ROM and see if that does anything.
