I can't seem to play the HD trailers off Apple's Quicktime site in Vista, but other H.264 videos work fine.

eg. The Cornell video won't play at all in IE 7. The links don't seem to work. In Firefox 1.5 the links work fine and it plays the sound, but with a black screen - no video.

However, my Vista demo video plays just fine. It's an H.264 video too.

Its Windows: Its buggy
Its Beta: Even more buggy
Vista's not out yet: More buggy - iTunes/QT haven't been designed for Vista

He came to THE CORRECT FORUM because he's running it on a MacBook. Does that make a bit more sense?

I don't think it's as much that it's Windows, or even Vista, as that QT isn't ready to run on Vista, at least not well enough to play the high def content Eug is trying to play. Eug, do the standard def trailers on the Apple site work at all?

No, the 480p trailers don't work either. Or, at least the 480p trailers on the HD site don't work. I haven't tried 480p trailers from elsewhere on the QT site. However, my low bitrate 540p trailer (linked in the first post) works fine.

I was just wondering if others had the same issue. There probably isn't a quick fix, given that this is QT on Vista Beta, but if there is a workaround I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Not a biggie though.

That definitely sounds like something to do with the way QickTime is interacting with Vista or at least the way the encoding used on the trailers is working through QT. This is what beta software is all about-see what doesn't work. You probably should report this anomaly to MS through their beta feedback system.

Surely this is not a Vista problem, but the fact that QT is not designed for Vista - hence it will not work properly

Heh. The beta feedback system on MS's site is fairly convoluted. I'll try again later, but after a few minutes of looking I couldn't actually figure out how to submit the feedback on this topic. Maybe I missed something obvious though I dunno.

It's not a bug that you can't watch HighDef in Vista. You have to be using HDCP Compatible hardware to even watch any high definition signal. It's like macrovision for high def. It's not fun, cause if you just bought nice new monitors chances are they don't support the HDCP.
pst... Here's a little tid bit, even the video cards that say they do, don't. So yes if you looked for it and thought you bought it. Nope. It's not there.

I have the vista beta on my pc, and i found that through firefox the hd movie trailers for quicktime work, so you should try that. I can't figure out why ie7 won't work with them, but i think it has something to do with the new windows defender. God, if everything could be as easy as a mac!!!

I'm probably not telling you anything you don't know...

Have you tried it with Vista in Classic appearance mode (so it looks like Win9x-Win2k)... that mode won't use the new graphics engine. The other appearances do even if you're not using Aero Glass.

Also, perhaps it works better if you tell Vista to use "XP SP2" compatibility mode for Quicktime. Just a thought.
