I've been using a Macbook running Windows and OSX for about 2 weeks now.
I just downloaded the latest updates on all the mac software including the osx security update for intel based macs.
When I restarted, the apple that usually shows up on the screen flickered between images of a folder with a question mark and a circle with a slash through it. The computer then booted up in Windows.
I restarted and held down the option key. The two drives showed up as usual, so I picked my OSX drive. The same thing happened; flickering Apple icon and boot up in Windows.
Can anyone tell me what's happening and what I can do to fix it? I hope I don't have to reload all of this from scratch.
Thanks.

I restarted in Verbose mode and got a message reading:
"Could not open file 'mach-kernel'
error loading kernel 'mach-kernel' "
Maybe that will help to get to the bottom of this.

Basically, you need to either try and attempt an archive and install to get your data back, or worse, erase and install. Without mach-kernel, OS X will not boot.

You were right Fry. After much nashing of teeth, I had to Archive and Install. It wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it would be.
The lesson to be learned here, don't run all your updates at once. Download the osx update, then fix permissions, restart...do the same with java, then do the same with your application updates. Too many updates in one sitting can kill your operating system.
Glad it's all fixed now.

I've never ever had running all updates at once break my system. Ever. Not once.
Something is rotten in Denmark, yes, but I doubt that it's performing multiple updates at once.
Maybe I just run a pretty clean system without a lot of extra crap.

Same here. I've been using Software Update since about 8.1. Never had any problems installing all the updates offered. Something was wrong with the OP's system before the updates were attempted.
