I'm not sure whether or not you've installed this copy of XP or not. If you have, there are ways to ask XP what version it is. The simplest is to RIGHT click on "My Computer" and select "Properties." You'll get a window that is titled "System Properties," and it will show in its upper right your Windows version.

Further, even if you haven't installed the disc yet, you can tell by looking at them in most cases. It will say Windows XP Home SP2 (or Service Pack 2) if it's a hologram disc. If it's a plain printed disc, it might too-you just have to look at it closely.

well thanks ghp!

it seems the holograph is XP. the web page says XP SP2

my credit card company is withholding payment etc and they don't really answer their emails.

but I have just the mac track pad so if you know how I can "right click" with the mac pad or another way id like to hear it.

thanks apprecite the WD help

let me know anyother way to check on the windows partition with just what I have.

I may have a wired wheel mouse that has a right button. but ive always programed that button with the mac logitech software

maybe winndows will recognize the right botton.

will try tomorrow. hope to hear anyother news

cheers

Select My Computer, and then press Alt+Enter. It'll have the same effect as the right click.

I have to keep remembering that not everyone running XP has a two button (at least) mouse! Anyway, pheonixash's method works too, as does selecting Control Panel|Performance and Maintenance|System.

If you can read the hologram on the disc, you can get a good idea of whether or not it has SP2 by seeing if it reads "Version 2002". This indicates SP1 but not SP2. Bit of it doesn't have SP2, not all is lost! You can, using a Windows computer, create an installation disc that includes SP2 from ANY Windows XP installation disc. It's a process called "slipstreaming," and there's a tacked thread in this forum about it. It really is quick and easy-well relatively quick anyway.

Later... More info here. If you can mount the CD, you can check its version in a text file on the disc. It's called "eula.txt", and it's found in the I386 folder of the install disc. Here's a list of what you'll see in the LAST LINE of the file and what it means:

Windows XP Home Retail
EULAID:WX.4_HOM_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP1 Home Retail
EULAID:XPSP1_RM.1_HOM_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP2 Home Retail
EULAID:XPSP2_RM.1_HOM_RTL_EN

Windows XP Professional Retail
EULAID:WX.4_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP 1 Professional Retail
EULAID:XPSP1_RM.1_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP 2 Professional Retail
EULAID:XPSP2_RM.0_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP Media Center 2005 Retail
EULAID:MCE05_RM.0_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP 64-Bit Retail
EULAID:XPSP1_RM.1_P64_RTL_EN

Substitute OEM for RTL for OEM versions.

(Thanks to Wesley Vogel and this discussion board thread for the details.)

One more detail: a slipstreamed XP install disc will retain the ORIGNIAL disc's EULA so you won't be able to tell this way. But since it's been locally produced, I'd HOPE that whoever made the disc would label it properly!

If you got Win XP to install through Boot Camp, you have SP2. An older version of XP will not install.
