Hey guys,
So i just bought my first mac, a macbook, 2ghz, 1gig ram, and I'm trying to run windows under parallels. Is there some extra something i need to install or set? When i run parallels with windows the computer slows to a crawl. It's unusable. Is this normal?

How much RAM are you using in Parallels for Windows?
How many other apps are you running?

Slowing to a crawl probably means you're swapping to disk. Buy more RAM.

It's probably a RAM issue, although I'm not sure. I've heard that running Parallels with 1 GB of RAM gets a bit pokey, but 2 GB clears it up. Also, you may want to see how much RAM Parallels is allocating to the guest OS.

P.S. I know it's not yet linked from the main MacNN page, but you'll probably want to post your next Parallels question in the Alternative Operating Systems forum before some moderator scolds you.

P.P.S. Welcome to the Mac community!

No it's not normal. We have Parallels deployed in our company as a standard software on our MBPs. Our stock config for laptops are 2GB of RAM, with Parallels set to use 512Kb of RAM for the guest OS (as per recommendation from Parallels).

This works fine and we don't see any performance hit. Remember to install the Parallel Tools from within the Windows OS. This makes a big difference.

Parallels is an amazing piece of software, and as this report from InfoWorld shows, MSIE can load pages just as fast as Safari (or even faster).

Parallels questions, as with all alternative operating systems (and what makes them work) on Macs, go in the Alternative Operating Systems forum, NOT Applications.

512kKb? That's amazing!

Seriously though, my Windows desktop at work is running 2GB of which probably half is used up for VPC guests running 512MB/machine at any given time.

Can't wait until I get my hands on a MacBook for my personal use!
