ok, i have a macbook, 2 ghz, 512 ram (more is on the way), 60 gb hd, and am trying to connect to my wireless router while running windows xp. the router is a linksys (model # befw11s4) 802.11b. connecting is no problem while running os x, but unfortunetly, i need to use windows for my job and thus need the internet. i installed the mac drivers already. i am also using wpa security key. anyone have any ideas? do i need to update my router?

It should work fine, except for the fact that your router is ancient. I'd definitely get a newer one, as much for the faster speeds as the likelihood that it may be choking on you.

I didn't know that such old routers as the BEFW11S4 supported WPA. If not, that's your problem right there-and another great reason to get a newer router. WEP, the earlier security system supported by original 802.11b equipment, is, to put it bluntly, crap. It's almost trivial to break and so it provides only the illusion of security. WPA, on the other hand is truly secure as long as you use a decently long and complex passphrase.

i did fail to mention that i am using xp with the latest update for boot camp beta (1.1 i believe), and it does connect to the router every once in a while, 20% of the time to be honest. its odd, really. a new router is probably the way i'll go, we'll see if that works. i do know that my brother, who owns a dell laptop, is also running windows xp and he can connect with few problems.

on a side question, what router is the best for the dollar right now? another linksys?
