Hey everyone,

I have a friend who asked if i would ask this question for him. He has an upgraded G3 Powermac. Heres some of the other information he gave me; OS 10.4.6 , 450 MHZ processor, 576 mb memory. Oncea again i dont know much about macs but he doesnt have the internet so i said i would do this for him. Is it possible to put windows on this computer? If so what additions need to be made? I would appreciate any help. thanks for your time.

No, you can't run windows natively on that machine. You could run Windows through a program called Virtual PC, but on a G3 it's going to be PAINFULLY slow.

Yeah, on an old G3 Windows would be virtually unusable. Technically possible with VirtualPC, but we're talking a system that would feel like it was on a <100MHz processor.

If you managed to get your hands on an OLDER version of VirtualPC and maybe an OLDER Windows 9x version, then that might do you 'okay'..... but don't expect to run 2000 or XP and expect it to fly. And yes, since i'm a gamer, i should add that Windows games running in emulation aren't even worth the trouble.

Don't bully me, I got an Uzi... HOO-HAH!

The problem is a G3 Powermac uses a processor called the PowerPC which can't run Windows. Virtual PC is a software translation to translate the Intel processor language Windows is written in to the PowerPC software language a G3 Powermac understands. This is going to make Windows run slowly because this translation process is very intensive.

The latest Macintoshes use Intel processors so no translation is required to run Windows.

Yes you can run Windows you can use a free apple aapplication called Boot Camp. You can get it by going to http://www.apple.com/downloads/bootcamp if you do not have internet you can go somewwheere else and save it on a disk. Note this will run kindoff slow but faster than the other ones it will probably make you feel like you have a 350MHZ and Mac OS X 10.3 but not to bad. If this doesn't work feel free to email me at Subway3@mac.com I have other ideas!

WTF dude? Did you not read any of the posts above you? No boot camp on this Mac. VirtualPC only. On this hardware, even VPC isn't a practical option.
