What did the error message say? When did the error occur (e.g. before Windows XP install, at the end of the Windows XP install, when entering Windows XP serial number, etc.).

error message:
"A preblem has been detected and windows has shutdown to prevent damage to your computer

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this scren appears again, follow these steps

check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed if this is a new intallation, ask your harware or software manifacture for any window updates you might need

If problem continues, disable or remove newly installed hadware or software. disable BIOS memory option such as cashing or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select start up, options, and select safe mode

technical information:
STOP: 0X0000000A (0X00000010, 0X000000002, 0X00000000, 0X8051AA58)"

this error pops up after blue screen intalation, you restart and windows begins its intalation. the error message pops up right before the serial number is asked

The presumptive problem is a dirty or faulty Windows XP disc. The IRQL_NOT_LESS... error is a low level logic error that CANNOT happen with a working disc. Windows can install on almost ANY PC hardware, so it's NOT your hardware giving you problems. But it could easily be a scratch, a particularly big fingerprint, or even a badly burned slipstreamed XP disc.

If your disc is "pressed" (all the official XP distribution discs are pressed instead of burned), then clean that puppy thoroughly! I use alcohol preps and fluffy papertowel for this, as I get very thorough cleaning and almost no lint. A burned disc, like one you slipstreamed SP2 into, can be dirty too, but it may be a good idea just to start over and re-slipstream onto a new disc.
