Hey all, as I am always testing out productive ways to use my old Clamshell iBook I was wondering something...
How on earth would I install Ubuntu (or any Linux) on a Clamshell without using a CD? The CD-Rom died on my Clamshell a few months back and while I can install OS 9 and OS X using firewire, I have no idea how to get Linux on there without a CD. Any ideas?
I looked up a network install but that requires you to boot to the CD still and choose "other install", so that won't help me. Rack those brains folks or if you just know the answer let me know!
Cheers.
Gear - I do have multiple Macs on hand if they are needed, and a couple PC's, I have full firewire network setup, wireless network setup, and Target disk mode available if that helps.

I don't think that target disk mode will help you much here. If you had an external CD or DVD drive, I think that things would be fine. Otherwise, you might try pulling the little hdd out of the clamshell and putting it into another mac, then installing, then moving it back. That might work.

I just thought of something, using an iPod Nano as a boot drive? I just formatted my iPod Nano and I am copying over the Ubuntu files to it. Now I gotta try to get the Clamshell to see the USB nano harddrive as a boot drive, any help there?

I used Windows to format it as an external HD. Still, Clamshell does not see it as a boot drive, mainly cause of the USB thing. Why on EARTH do macs have to be so frustrating when it comes to booting. PC's can boot from firewire, USB, CD, Network, anything really. Macs have to lock out USB as a boot option, except for the new Intel Macs.
Oh well, unless someone has any bright ideas I am giving up and just resigning Panther as the Clamshell OS.
