I downloaded the trial of Parallels and tried for a while to install Ubuntu 6.10 from an .iso image on the desktop and burned to a disc. It wouldn't work, it said No Boot Volume. I went through all of the guides and settings to no avail. What am I doing wrong?

Should I try a different distro?

What is the best Linux for a newbie to use?

Anyone tried that Mint distro?

From what I understand... Ubuntu is a "newbie" Linux.

You may want to check their forums as they seem to have a place for Mac support.

FWIW, I have Ubuntu 5.x running in Parallels without problems. I installed it from one of those freebie CDs.

I have booted directly from Ubuntu no problem. Does Parallels let you mount up an ISO like VPC? You could save on discs that way.

I can save you some trouble here. I have never been able to get a linux on my power mac g4 and I have tried them all. I managed to get it on one of the hard drives I have used on apple and put them on a dell, but ubuntu took one day before I got a note saying I could not reach the ubuntu server, however the program was running fine. The only question was whose server was I on? The cd burner was deleted off the program and the drive will not boot tiger. linux or anything else after that. But if you have alot of hard drives it is a great project. I do not know if this had anything to do with it but now my mac does not recognize the install disk. Checksum says there are no packets on either of my install disks. They cost about $140 each. They do not even see a hard drive now that never had linux on it. The first panel with readme, xtools and whatever do not show up either, the install goes directly to the language box for an install.

From my own personal experience if I use another linux it will be on a separate hard drive and not on the ones I use osx on. I have tried all the linux programs and not one of them holds a candle to tiger for ease of use or anything else. Without learning a bunch of command lines you are not going to be able to put any programs on a linux. PClinux lost the firefox immediatlly and the downloads and updates that were supposed to be automatic, well they would not open. and a box said they had "applications." That is just my opinion though.

Well, the OP doesn't have a G4, s/he is trying to install Ubuntu in Parallels on an Intel Mac, which is a different situation.
