Just thought that the experts would be in here. I want to get a large file from my file at work and my flash drives keep breaking, I can't hookup the iPod to the work computer, and it's too large to email. Can I just hook up the macbook with an ethernet cable to the computer to network them and show up as a drive? Or do I have to go into boot camp to do that?

Any ideas let me know.

Thanks,
Mike

Define "large file." If you're not allowed to connect your iPod to your work computer, you may not be allowed to connect another computer too! That's one of those "security issues" that you have to pay attention to-it's the boss' computer and his network, so you have to play by his rules.

And aside from some rather arcane configuration tasks, there's nothing special about networking a Windows XP computer with anything, least of all a Mac; Macs running OS X have Samba built in and that's a Good ThingĀ® because it's DESIGNED to help users connect with a Windows computer.

Now, for networking with said Windows computer, there are a few things you can do. At it's simplest, all you'll need is a reasonably recent Mac (your MacBook should do fine) and a regular ethernet patch cable. Plug one end into the Mac's port, the other into the Windows machines, and do a couple of settings and you're there. Those settings involve telling your Mac to use an IP address that's compatible with the Windows machine's so they can actually talk.

If everything is running as the defaults have it, then you should be able to find out your Windows computer's IP address from the Command Prompt by simply typing 'ipconfig /all' (without the quotes) and pressing "Enter." But you may not be able to do that if there are certain security measures in place. If you can't use Command Prompt you need your IT department's help. If this is a legit issue, they shouldn't have any problem with helping you.

Of course you could always burn the file to a CD...

Why do your flash drives "keep breaking"? And what do you mean by that?

All of a sudden, my flash drive just stopped being recognized... It happened on an Iomega, then an imation. Then, I was able to get a warranty replacement on the Iomega and now I just opened that up to use (a lot easier then networking!)

I'll bet. If the Iomega stopped working while on your work computer, have your IT folks look at that machine. There could be something going on with it. Otherwise it's great that you got your files handled.
