I'm looking to convert my olympus DSS file format into something more universal - like wav.
Can I do this? IF I can, what software will do it for me?
Anything else I need to know about doing this - if I can?
Thanks in advance.

Unless you are dealing with some Windows-only software, I think you got this post in a VERY different forum from where it belongs. Can you expand on your statements to let us know just what you're trying and what you've done so far?

OK, here's the deal.
I'm using an Olympus DS33000 digital recorder (dictaphone) to record hours of archived family reminisces. The recordings are in the DSS format.
I'd like to share these recordings with other family members - BUT - everyone would need the Olympus DSS software to listen to them. Mp3 or WAV can be listened to universally - across both Mac and PC platforms.
My question is ... can the Olympus DSS recordings be translated into the Mp3 or WAV formats?
... and ... just thought of this ... if I had to record what I have on DSS format onto the Mp3 or WAV formats by holding the audio from the DSS up to a micerophone, what cold I use to record the recordings? Is there a length restriction on Mp3 or WAV?
Sorry for any confusion - hope this clears things up a bit.
Thanks!

My first recommendation is that you STOP recording on DSS. That format is horrible. It was developed in the early 80's and hasn't evolved since then. I would recommend you purchase the Olympic WM-300 or WM-320 which record in the WMA format at 44.1kh/64kbit second. These devices sound more like 'cd-quality'. ($80 for the 300, $100 for the 310).
Transcription Gear - WM-300
I run a transcription company and this is the device we recommend to our clients.
DSS can be converted, but usually only with the software that came with the device. You might want to try Olympus. It only runs on Windows. (You can get a 'mac' player, but it does not convert).
Again, STOP using DSS, particularly if the audio is of any importance to you or future generations. The WMA files can be played natively by both Windows and Mac and can be converted to MP3 as well. (EasyWMA)

It's nice to see I wasn't WAY off on this. I don't know anything about the DSS format, but Filmo seems to have the credentials to back up his statements.
I wound up needing an audio recorder a while back and got a Sony unit-which is only supported by Windows software. This is a perfect use for Boot Camp as far as I'm concerned... Sony has a proprietary format as well, but will also do .wma. I hope to find some sort of third party, Mac software to handle this eventually, but for now, i'm getting ready to install the Sony software on the 20GB Windows partition on my MacBook Pro.

I would really avoid the 'DVF' format as well. (if possible.)
You might want to check out www.sweetwater.com.
This Zoom H4 looks to be the new killer device. Pro sound quality, MP3 and PCM (uncompress). Features decent microphones and XLR inputs. We're getting ready to start recommending this to clients who want something a little nicer than the Olypmus.

WOW!
Just got off the phone with Sweetwater.com ... and the Zoom H4 is absolutely PERFECT for what I want - a cross platform audio transfer - no hassle, no muss and certainly no fuss!
Thanks so very much. You solved my problems - coupled with a 2Gig flashcard ... I'm on my way!
Oh, yeah ... Filmo, if you ever come to San Diego, look me up - I'll buy the dinner!
