Hi,

I recently gave my old Ibook clamshell to my parents, its running OSX v10.3 but they both appear to hate it. They are a bit stuck in the windows rut. Anyway, I want to try them on another OS and I'm thinking linux as its the only other OS I know of that can be booted on a non-intel mac. I just wanted to ask if anyone knows if there are other OSes I can try. Initially I was looking for a bootable x86 emulator so that I could run windows on it but as far as I can tell you cant emulate x86 without first booting into either linux or OSX.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate them.

A Windows emulator on a clamshell? You're talking about maybe getting performance equivalent to a 66MHZ 486.

Ubuntu is a good Linux distro, but honestly, on a machine of that vintage, you'd have to stick to a rather minimal set of software to get decent performance. I'm also doubtful that people who find MacOS X undesirable are going to be thrilled by Linux.

Someone at my work has suggested that XPDE (which sort of clones the XP desktop on Linux) would be good for a someone who liked windows but could only have linux however I doubt if this will run on the mac linux distro when its written on x86?

The clamshell runs OSX 10.39 well, she has no performance worries with it (execept in iphoto which I personally think is bloatware rubbish) its the 350mhz clam with firewire and 320mb or ram so it is the gruntier of the clamshells that were produced.

I already ruled out emulation tho.

Yeah, XPde appears to be closed-source x86-only sort of thing, doesn't really work. There are themes that aim to imitate XP, but that only goes so far.
