I would like to install windows FLP (wiki here) onto bootcamp. Now from what I have read it is stripped down XP SP 2 but does have direct X. I'm doing this because (embarrassingly) I would like to play Half Life 2 on it. Has anyone had experience with this XP OS using bootcamp?

I would like to avoid my first encounter with bootcamp where I made the mistake of attempting to install XP SP1 (of course it would not load, the computer froze and I had to disassemble the MP to get the CD out.

As you found out, Bootcamp only works with XP SP2.

FLP is a stripped down version of XP SP2- theoretically it should work - just wondering if anyone has done it.

I haven't had the time to mess with it, but I haven't seen anything that should get in the way.

Sounds like a particularly good idea for Parallels, if it works.

Oh it *sings* on parallels - especially on slower / less RAM MBPs. But you cant really play games on Parallels (no video acceleration). I would highly suggest it if you need windows for the occasional job, and you need to keep it running on your MBP all day - heck it consumes only 64MB RAM (128 MB suggested) its faster in some tasks than W2Kpro....

As much as I hate the concept of running Windows on a computer that bears an Apple logo, that's pretty cool tkmd.

UPDATE: I successfully installed Windows fundamentals on the Mac Pro. However there s one trap that I fell into. I have a MP with 3 hd's in it : First was the original 250 hd that came with it, and the other two I have set up in a RAID 0 (stripped) array. I decided to setup bc on the original hd - copied the drivers from bc assistant and rebooted. windows flp booted (slowly) and then wanted to reformat my partition that I made for it. Beware windows flp (and I assume all flavors of windows) wants the hd that it is going to be on to be designated as disk 0, so I had to reboot and pull out the raid hds. Installation went fine after that. Interestingly this stripped down version "sees " all four processors, which I was pleasantly surprised about since I thought that only XP pro could do that. Overall, I think that is a great gaming OS since its light and the whole OS takes up only 651 MB! It passes WGA no problem and thus can be updated with latest direct x drivers.
