Anyone using this?
I have been very impressed with the lectures a reading I have done on the ZFS (file system) and wanted to take it for a spin. Solaris looks like any easy way to this.
I'm loving os X at the moment but also run Ubuntu on my server and desktop and Windows at work.
I think it's time for exposure to another OS.
I was just wondering if anyone else is using it and had any tips or things to look out for?
I have a macbook core2 duo.
Also any offshoots of Solaris worth looking at? I plan to download it tomorrow at work where we have LAN esq bandwidth

I installed Solaris 10 and it was a piece of crap. Very unimpressed with the 1980's GUI and the sluggishness on my MacPro. Immediately canned it and stuck with Ubuntu, XP, and OS X.

What Gui were you using on it?
What file system were you using? ZFS? Comments?
You can use pretty much anything I thoguht? XFCE, KDE, GNOME, Openbox, Beryl-Compiz etc??
I was going to download it today at work but there isn't a single DVD image
They post them out though so I'm going to try that way

What were you expecting going into your experiment as far as GUIs go? Solaris is very much a server OS, and most people I know of who use Solaris as an OS don't use the GUI at all.

Hey, if you can rag on Mac OS X for not being enough like OSS solutions even when it's not supposed to be, I think he can rag on Solaris for not being enough like Mac OS X (in areas where it presumably is supposed to be).

But OS X is a sort of hybrid OS... Apps like Mail, iLIfe, etc. are all pretty light weight and designed to be basic, but the OS also includes a terminal, utilities like Directory Access, NetInfo Manager, X11, and other tools that let you get into more advanced things.
In other words, Solaris makes no attempt to be a consumer OS, but Apple sort of gestures at being useful as a server/robust client and even carries a product designed to be used as a server.
I guess I just think that if you're going to do something, why not do it right?
