Hey forum junkies!
I was just curious how many people are using Vista under Boot Camp.
If you could leave a brief post about performance, stabability, problems, or whatever you want reguarding your experience. Please include the specs of the version and hardware of your Macbook.

Just doing a bit of asking around before I cut up my drive. I need to run windows for school ... *gag*

Sure I dont see why not, I run Windows Vista Ultimate on my Macbook and it runs just fine, everything works including the new Aero Glass interface and Flip 3D. But I would recommend getting at-least 1 GB of RAM.

Current Setup:
Macbook Core 2 Duo
1 GB RAM
120 GB Hard Drive
Windows Vista - Mac OSX 10.4.10

Why? What is it about Vista that you really want? I have been a Windows user since (literally) Windows 1.0 in 1985. There's nothing that Vista offers that you can't get through XP, though perhaps with a helper app or plug in. Except for the absolute need for lots more expensive hardware and RAM of course.

Seriously, what is it about Vista that makes it a "must have" for you?

Where did I say it was a must have? I like the look of it, as opposed to the look of XP. And when Leopard comes out, I want to have both OS'es look really nice and snazzy. As far as performance, yes I'm aware that Vista is currently more problematic than XP, but over time it was stabilize, and I probably won't even be running Vista until late 07 early 08. It'll be good to go by then.

Perhaps "must have" was an exaggeration, but it looked like you intended to go with Vista for some specific reason; I wanted to know what your reasons were. The look certainly is nice, but I haven't seen anything about what it does with the look that makes me want to install it at all. And I hope you're right about Vista being stable by the end of the year-I have my doubts.

I agree with all your points. For me, it's all about the aesthetics. XP just looks terrible aside OSX, and that difference is only going to grow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a stable Vista by the end of the year.

Know what concerns more than anything though? I'm not seeing too much new and useful functionality being pumped into Leopard. I'm hoping that Leopard doesn't follow that "let's make everything pretty and call it a new OS" type of thing. I know they're tossing some new stuff in, but I question how useful it will be.

I ran Vista Ultimate in Bootcamp for a while. It worked perfect, but my only complaint is Vista takes up 6 gigs, so you'll need a bigger partition if you want to play games. I reccomend XP.

I would go with XP. XP uses less hard drive space and can run all the same stuff (aside from Halo 2). On a laptop hard drive space becomes a huge concern.

There are a number of, for lack of a better term "skins" for XP that allow you to get away from the default "Fisher Price design" and make the desktop and windows look a lot better. I think they're referred to as "shells", but that has a whole different meaning when you don't specify that you're talking about a GUI. That may be a better, and certainly much less expensive, solution if aesthetics is your main concern. Just as you're noting not much crowing about real added functionality in Leopard, I don't see any real additions in Vista-except for the "Cancel/Allow" of course!

Agreed, Vista and XP are similar enough that I recommend XP to anyone who will have to pay for a copy. If you can get either one for free though, I'd suggest the newer Vista, just for the sake of future-proofing yourself. Otherwise, there just aren't enough differences to justify the cost.

BTW, running Vista in Boot Camp on my MacBook. No problems whatsoever, other than hard drive space. 25 GB is barely enough for Vista and a few additional programs (Office, etc).

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

Hey can you link me to some sites that show how to do that? If I can get XP looking up to speed, I'll GLADLY avoid VISTA.
