What are you using to burn the CDs? (Computer, burner, software...) What brand of media are you using?

Does the machine play audio CDs? Can you get other CDs to do anything? Have you thought of cleaning your drive? If that's not what's happening, it sounds like a hardware problem.

I'm stumped. It doesn't make sense that it would refuse a PRESSED CD but still play music CDs.

Does the disk mount while you are booted into OS X?

BTW, the plural of CD is "CDs", not "CD's".

He means does it get added to Finder. Or does it do something else. What specifically happens when you put this disc into your computer?

So in the CD is the Ubuntu ISO file? If so, that is your problem.

You need to burn the *contents* of the ISO file, not the ISO file itself. To do this, from Disk Utility select "Burn Image" and then select your ISO file.

That's showing the contents of the .iso file. But you can't boot from that-you need to burn the .iso image to a disk that is bootable. Disk Utility should be able to do this for you (but I'm on a PC right now and can't give you the proper step-by-step process).

never skate: Google "burn disk image OS X". I don't mean to sound like a prick or discourage you from experimenting with Linux, but this is the kind of thing you will need practice at researching yourself if you want to step into Linux. Moreover, I've already given you the instructions you need.

Here are the instructions again:

I'm feeling helpful today, so here we go.

In your Applications folder, there's another folder called Utilities. In there, there's an app called Disk Utility. With a blank CD in your Mac, click "Burn" and then select the ISO image you downloaded. Follow the directions, and you'll end up with a bootable disk.

refit works well. but i just wanted to add my experience with linux livecd's on my mbp (before refit).

if i selected the disc to boot in the 'startup disk' pref pane some cd's would be spit out when booting and show a black screen. if i kept pushing the disc back in each time it was ejected, on about the third time, it would boot from it.

a similar thing would happen if i selected the 'option' key at startup.

the problem is convincing your computer that you really want to boot something other than macos x.
