I'm a Windows noob and I have a freshly installed copy of Windows XP on my Boot Camp partition, but Windows XP seems awfully slow on a brand new Mac. I get the Windows equivalent of the spinning beachball when apps launch. I thought XP would be lightning fast on such new hardware. It seems as if XP is only using one CPU.

Is there a way to see if XP is using both CPUs?

Define "awfully slow." It takes my 2.0GHz MBP (Core Duo) a minute or so to go through the boot cycle, and a little while after that to be fully functional (faster than my AMD powered 2GHz PC desktop by quite a bit!). However, I have chosen certain functions and programs that I allow to start at boot and kept others from doing so. So first, how long does it take-by some actual time measuring device? Second, you can find out what all is starting at startup by clicking on Start|Run and typing "msconfig" (without the quotes) then clicking on the Startup tab. There might be some stuff you're not really interested in running from the beginning in there.

Supposedly XP uses both cores by default-but it may not use them fully or efficiently. Read this MS knowledgebase article on the subject and maybe install the fix (under "Resolution").

Have you installed all of the drivers correctly? The thing that's most likely to be making things seem sluggish is the standard XP VGA driver. If it's not that, then you may have a horrible piece of Spyware.

Startup time was 1 min 25 secs.

I just expected XP to feel much snappier, like OS 9 on a G5.

No, XP won't start terribly fast on any 2GHz-class computer; it's got tons of files to access, read/write from/to, and so on, as well as building a lot of really hairy data structures. And the Registry is probably the worst disk hog there is and it MUST be loaded before anything can start. A really, REALLY fast disk system might make things faster, but startup is otherwise going to be a small trial. On the other hand, 1 1/2 minutes is an instant compared to the way a well-used Win95 or NT4 system started!

The real "snappy" part comes when you're using XP; I find it quite fast on my MBP, particularly compared to my 2.0GHz AMD desktop.
