I finally got the chance today to start installing XP via Parallels on my wife's MBP.... and I'm having nothing but problems with the XP CD. While installing, the DVD drive will whir up and down and make all sorts of odd noises, then I get a dialog box saying the install is shutting down because the drive can't be found.

I doubt it's the DVD drive that's the problem, though, because we have absolutely no problems with using DVD's and CD's on the OS X side. Has anyone had this problem with Parallels before?

I'm going to try copying the install CD to a disc image and mounting that as my install media, but I shouldn't have to do that....

Edit: It's installing fine off of the image, and going quite a bit faster than it was off the CD....

I did that a couple weeks ago with a fresh XP pro install for Parallels and also liked the speed. It went very quickly.

It ain't Parallels. The Windows XP installer seems to have trouble with CDs that aren't absolutely perfect (at least as far as the installer is concerned). I've found that copying a PRESSED install CD to a burned one made the process work (more than once in fact). Mounting a disc image and installing from that is a very good idea, and of course anything on the hard drive is going to be tons faster than the CD.
