Would it be possible to run xp in parallels and vista in bootcamp on a macbook? It was just a thought that popped into my head.

Yes. Run XP in Parallels from a disk image (virtual disk), and Vista from a partition on the hard drive.

Yes, you can run as many OSes in Parallels, but only 1 (that Apple allows) in Boot Camp.

It also works fine to make multiple partitions, and install (for example) two different versions of OS X, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Linux on the different partitions. You just need to use the refit tool to sync up the partition maps before installing Windows.
