Nightmare! There is no data on the HDD, but it's read only. I've tried setting permissions on Vista but it hasn't worked.

Is there a way to scrap the current format and put Extended Journaled on it instead?

Vista is crap! I confirm

Right, OSX can read but not write NTFS out of the box. With free software (macfuse and 3g-ntfs) you can read and write NTFS volumes on OSX.

And yes, you can just open up Disk Utility and reformat the drive, but then you won't be able to read/write it on a Windows box without additional commercial software.

That's not an accurate statement-it's not doing what you wanted, but it DID do what you told it to. Not knowing what will happen before you do something is about 85% of all "computer problems" in most corporate environments, and the most effective techs are those who have teaching skills along with technical skills-at least they can teach the users not to touch stuff they're not supposed to.

As mduell says, there are FREE ways around this stumbling block. I highly recommend KEEPING the NTFS format and using the free tools that allow OS X to write, as well as read, the NTFS drive.

Ditto the above, Vista did exactly what it was supposed to do. Now you have to go here:
NTFS-3G: Stable Read/Write NTFS Driver
and here:
macfuse - Google Code
Good luck!
