I have McAfee Internet Suite and it alerts me whenever some program tries to modify the system of talk to a server. Got it free from work

I'm personally unthrilled with McAfee's products lately-not that they don't work, but I find them more complex and unwieldy than they need to be. Zone Alarm, even the free version, does provide the "inbound and outbound" port monitoring that seems to be Little Snitch's forte, along with some other good stuff like when certain critical files are touched (modified, locked or unlocked, etc.). And as kmkkid says, it's a firewall too-superior to the one that comes with SP2 in no small part because it monitors outbound traffic.

I don't know if this is the case with all security/anti-virus software but my company uses McAfee and it kills the performance of my computer, to the point of not being useable.
I've recommend zone alarm to friends, a few years back. It was good then, not sure if its better/worse but its does virtually the same things as little snitch

I used Outpost Firewall when I was on XP. It will prompt you like Little Snitch does, with deny/allow once/always etc. and there are all kinds of rules you can make for it.
They have a forum which has a tutorial on setting it up properly- I went through that just for piece of mind. It is anything but simple, though- there are all kinds of options and plugins for it. If you can't be bothered with all that...Zone Alarm, Comodo, or LookNStop are probably enough for you.
Check out Wilders Security Forums - Powered by vBulletin if you really wanna get into this- that is a fairly big windows security forum.

I second Zone Alarm. I've been using the free version for years now and am happy with it.

McAfee's products often take a lot of configuration to get smooth performance-and it depends on which product, what version, and a lot of other details whether you get decent performance out of the box or not. In a number of corporate settings, I've seen really smart IT departments select Symantec's products exclusively over McAfee's because they work well out of the box. In fact, my school provides Symantec's corporate security system to students (for free).
