My friend wants to know if he can wipe OS X completely off of his iMac and replace it with Vista...virtually turning his iMac in to a Windows machine. I don't know anything about computers, but I don't think it can be done, can it?

I would be too nervous to try it myself...for example, does doing something like this void any warranties? I guess if it doesn't work, he can just reinstall Os X, but I wouldn't do it.

Anyways, have any of you ever tried this?

Yes, I believe it would work. It shouldn't void any warrantees.

But why get rid of OS X? A Mac without OS X is just a really high quality PC with a Apple logo on it..
Signature depreciated.

Not with Windows, but Fedora Core 6. I did a basic default install on my MacBook Pro and everything worked fine (except WiFi). I used it for two weeks and found that there was something missing... so I put OS X back on it.

I don't see how it would void any warranty, just don't go to Apple for tech support.

Apple recommends leaving at least a 5GB OS X partition in place. Not that you can do much with that small a partition, but at least you can upgrade the Boot Camp Utility-and burn newer drivers. As far as I'm concerned, those drivers are absolutely essential and newer, better ones are very much welcome. Have your friend read the whole Boot Camp setup guide and remind him that the drivers don't come out as Windows files-they are released as part of the Mac-only Boot Camp updates.

That may very well change with Leopard though. I'd be surprised if they didn't start using their own Software Update in Windows to update their own drivers.
