I just received a 3-pack OEM version of Windows XP to install on a Mac Pro. There are warnings on the outside of the box that state you must install the software using the OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK).

I don't want to open the box till I know what the heck this is about. I tried to get information on the Windows Support site, but got nowhere. Has anyone installed an OEM version of Windows? Do you need an OPK? Is Microsoft a bunch of lying #@$$%$?

Have a nice day.

From MSFN:

Download the Windows OEM Installation Kit - NEW - MSFN Forums

I'm guessing this is what you need. It would appear that the OPK is used for installing OEM copies of Windows on hardware designed for resale. Generally, an OEM copy of Windows is licensed for installation on specific hardware (e.g. an OEM copy of Windows that ships with a Dell should not be installed on an eMachines computer). You can also buy OEM copies of Windows on sites like NewEgg, for installing on a computer you've built yourself, etc.

I'd try that link first - it sounds like what you need.
For all the trash I talk, I sure own a lot of Macs...

We buy 3 packs of OEM disks at work all the time, I'm 99% sure they must be the same as what you have. Brown box with red Microsoft seals on and a white label on the end?

You get a piece of card moaning about Service Pack 2c, compatibility issues and something about the OEM preinstallation kit and three cellophane wrapped XP Pro Manual + Disk with a license sticker attached to each.

They install just like a normal XP disc and work fine. The activation process does seem to have been wonky lately. Flagged up a brand new license as having been activated 5 times the other day, so you may have to go through the automated telephone process.

If you try to just run one of the CDs and it works, your problem is solved. Basically the preinstall thing is for building images that you just plant on the new computer's disk and you're done. But the OEM discs you have could simply have the entire OS with all the bells and whistles included. There's plenty of room on a standard CD for XP and everything you might want with it.
