i have this 500GB Maxtor drive that had been set up with a 50GB bootcamp partition. last week i got rid of the partition with bootcamp assistant, because i wanted to make a bigger one. i made the bigger partition started the windows install by starting up off the disc. i chose the partition and it copied the files over, but after the computer restarts to begin the real installation, i just get a black screen saying 'disk error, press any key to restart.'

i restarted into OS X and got rid of the partition. i made another, started the process again, and got the same error again. so i decided to start up off the mac os install disc to run disk utility. the drive had a minor thing that needed to be fixed, but now when i try to make a new partition, it says 'disk verification failed. use disk utility to repair this disk. wtf. just to make sure, i started off the OS X install disc again to check, and the disk was fine. so now i can't even make a 50GB partition to install windows again. i have 377GB free

so what should i try next? this drive is no more than a year old. think it's on it's way out?

Not necessarily, but it is possible. After you do a disk repair from the install DVD (which you say passes with no errors, right?) and then reboot back into Mac OS X from the disk, do you still get the error from Boot Camp Assistant about the disk? Was BC working fine before you started any of this (seems to be the case)?

yeah bootcamp had been working fine. i had two versions of XP on two separate HDs [one of them being the HD with issues now]. but ever since trying to start over, it's been nothing but trouble. and yes, i get the error after the HD appears fine in disk utility.

i just tried installing on my other HD. it let me make a partition but i got the same 'disk error' after the windows installer disc auto reboots the machine. i don't get it.

Boot from your OS X disc, and choose "Drive Utility" from the "Tools" menu. Use Drive Utility to repair the drive-the whole drive. You CANNOT do this from within OS X. You MUST do it from the install disc. See what this does for you and let us know how it goes.

already did that.

i was finally able to install on my other HD. i formatted the partition again in the windows installer instead of just leaving the partition the way it was after bootcamp made it. still doesn't explain why my other, larger drive can't be partitioned anymore.
