on my macbook pro i have mac os x and windows xp pro under boot camp i was wondering woudl it be possible for me to triple boot ubuntu linux without having to reinstall xp or reformating everything

Yes, but it's kind of a hassle.

I'm surprised Apple hasn't built a better boot manager/loader.

I would agree with it being a bit of a hassle. I would go the virtualization route and use Parallels or another application when using Linux. Just my thoughts though. But when I did dual boot with Suse Linux I used rEFit. Good Luck!

so would i just follow the install of linux through parallels or would it interfere with my xp or mac os x partitions

Installing an OS inside Parallels can't/won't interfere with anything.

That's the great thing about a virtual environment. You don't have to worry about it messing up with your actual partitions. It's like a step up from a Live CD.
