This is what you said on another board -- that Windows did it. But here in two previous threads you say OS X did it.

Which is it, and why the discrepancy?

Operating systems do not "eat files", they eat hopes and dreams.

You say Vista annihilated your data without warning because of user error? Basically, you're saying that you accidentally deleted your data and you're annoyed because Vista complied with your user error.

Only once can I actually say Windows ruined my data.

I had an XP Home CD with SP1. 128GB+ drive support didn't come in till SP2, my hard drive was 200GB. I booted the install CD, it took one look at my hard drive and ruined the partition table.

I had backups of course, so no real harm done.

seanc: you were trying to upgrade Windows without reformatting? If so, your hard drive probably wasn't ruined, it was just rendered unbootable because of the install, right?

An operating system should not destory user data without your consent, only OS files which prevent proper operating and booting.

The hard drive was/is fine, I think the partition tables just got screwed up.

Not sure why it happened, but it was a few years ago now anyway.

I've had no trouble installing Windows where faulty hardware or a cd wasn't to blame. The cds are a thing of the past now I've changed to using images.

There are also Windows tools for correcting or even recreating partition tables and fixing errors in boot sectors. (Imagine that-tools to un-goober Windows! ). But with the backups, you probably didn't have nearly as much cussing going on as if you had not backed up in a while, right?

I know there are tools to fix such things, but the thought of something free that could even do that when I'm in such a situation rarely occurs to me. Usually because it's 3am which is the entire reason I got into that mess in the first place.

Two hard drives, SyncBack (functions the same as rsync but has a nice GUI) and I have weekly backups, which is fine for me.

Wizards are helpful, but I would prefer Himalayan sherpas to guide me...

It IS hard to think straight at 3am, which of course makes it hard to remember that it's hard to think straight then... I've been there. Fortunately, my wife helps me realize that I'm getting all wound up over something that will wait until I'm conscious... Love that woman!
