I have VMware Beta 2 installed on my MacPro (2x3GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon 16GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM) with a brand new installation of Windows XP Pro SP2 installed, and I have yet to install a single application in my VM, but the performance of the virtual machine is so incredibly slow and sluggish that I almost can't bare using it anymore!

When I say slow, I mean for example the mouse sometimes stutters when simply moving it across my screen, and clicking on a button like 'OK' or 'Save' pauses for a good 1-2 seconds before actually doing whatever it's supposed to...

I currently have VMware configured to use 2 Processors and 2048MB of RAM. My primary Mac hard drive that I am running the virtual machine from has over 100GB of free space...

What are some of the possible causes of such a tremendous performance slow-down such as the one I am experiencing, and how can I go about resolving the issue?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Did you install the VMWare Additions?

Seconded. I used VMWare B2 since it was released with a Vista (!) VM, 1.5GB of memory, and only a single core, and I found performance to be perfectly acceptable. Granted, it was on an 8-core Mac Pro, but still.

To check, look at your Windows system tray (the rightmost part of the taskbar) for the VMWare Tools icon. Note: if you're upgrading from an older version, you'll also need to upgrade the tools.

While installing VMware Tools is a good idea, even without them you shouldn't be seeing such bad performance. We're currently trying to track down a bug where disk performance is very bad for no obvious reason - in the statusbar, is the hard disk always glowing blue? If so, it could be the same issue; if not, it's likely different.

Something else you could try as an experiment is using a single vCPU instead of two.

When you ask, "Did you install the VMWare Additions? ", are you referring to VM Tools? If so, I do have them installed and updated...

Would it make any difference If I have parallels desktop installed as well? Granted, they both aren't running at the same time, but it is still installed. Are there any known conflicts with any Mac apps/third-party preference panes/etc...?

Any other thoughts?
