I just installed Windows XP using Parallels. I only need it for two applications (must have but used infrequently) that are not Mac compatible. What is my virus exposure? I'm connected via a wireless network, would it help to disconnect while windows is open? Am I vulnerable when windows is closed?

You're as vulnerable to viruses on the Windows side as any Windows user. But Windows is encapsulated and isolated from OS X, so you don't have to worry about that. Run free antivirus software, like AVG, don't open strange attachments or unknown links and you should be fine.
