Not sure if this is a simple fix but lately XP Pro via Fusion has taken priority of my DVD drive.

If I insert a DVD it will read in XP only, once the virtual machine is shut down the DVD is read and appears on my OSX desktop.

With 4GB of RAM I have no need to shut down my virtual environment, why it reads the DVD before Leopard is beyond me.

What is the CD/DVD setting for your VM? If it's set to Autodetect I believe it will always connect to the physical drive if a disc is inserted. Try deselecting that and see what happens. You'll have to shutdown the VM to change that setting.

It was set to the specific drive. I changed it to autodetect and the same problem persists.

I see no other viable options

I guess the simplest solution may be to disconnect the CD/DVD drive after you boot up the VM. Virtual Machine->CD/DVD->Disconnect CD/DVD

Then just reconnect when you need to use the drive.

Not as transparent as I'd hoped, but thank you.
