I'm working on a new site and with my testing of different software I have been constantly uploading and removing files from my FTP server which takes a fair bit of time just waiting for the transfers.

I was thinking that for the mean time I will setup a Virtual OS dedicated as a web server. I have looked to see which distro of linux/unix has everything built in and easy instructions/steps to setup php, mysql etc.

If I get get a distro that has all this already in the OS rather than downloading would be best.

Thanks,

I can't speak for Ubuntu Server but the client runs extremely well out of the box. Thursday marks the release for 9.04 and so you could possibly download it and give it a spin to see if it will work for you.

I use RedHat Enterprise Linux at work. Love it. Surprisingly easy to use.

I use ubuntu server for my development. It offers a full LAMP installation out of the box which should get you up and running pretty quick. They also have a JEOS installation option if you want a smaller footprint. You don't need a lot of resources - mine has 8gigs of space and uses 256mb RAM.

You'll have to find a way to access your files. I compiled netatalk to work on my instances, but you can also use MacFusion to connect over SSH.

If you're just wanting a local web server to run privately for testing, it doesn't get any easier than XAMPP. You'll be up and running in seconds.
For all the trash I talk, I sure own a lot of Macs...
