I have one Mac running an old copy of VMware Fusion, which is heavy loaded with CAD and engineering apps. Something weird happened today as it was not able to open Fusion until I guessed rebooting the Mac would help… so, given I have Fusion 2.0x on another Mac and while it is not that heavy loaded there, I would like give it a try on the Mac still running Fusion 1.x but wishing not to lost any bit of the Fusion 1.x app & info running there.

In a nutshell, it is possible to install Fusion 2.x on the same Mac where 1.x is installed while keeping 1.x and its Virtual Machine intact?.

Thanks so much.

I would bet that the .vmdk disk image files work under either version.

You can only have one version of Fusion installed at a time, so no. However, remember that there's a difference between Fusion (the application) and your virtual machine(s) (the data) - you can upgrade Fusion to 2.0 and still use your existing virtual machine. Note that if you upgrade the virtual hardware of the virtual machine, you can't go back to 1.x unless you downgrade the virtual hardware first (under the Virtual Machine menu).

If you want to be paranoid, make a copy of the virtual machine before upgrading - if anything goes wrong, you can reinstall 1.x and restore the copy and be back where you started.

Thanks 'etung', that's what I finally did. I keep a copy of the virtual machine just in case but so far all seems to be good with Fusion 2.04 which was a free upgrade for 1.0 users. Nice one.
