Hello all,

I'm currently using a heavily modified iBook G4 1.33GHz to act as a home theater PC. Essentially, it uses OS X 10.4.11 to run VLC, which in turn runs mp4 files or dvd isos, or physical dvds. 95% of the time it works pretty well once it's up and running. I was curious about installing an alternate operating system to see if it'd perform a little better. I know OS X has a ton of stuff going on in the background, and many of those features I just never use. For the sake of knowing, I wondered if anyone out there could rattle off a list of different, more lean, operating systems to run on my iBook. Thanks

Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux (DSL) are both lean Linux Distros...not sure if they have a PPC port. Check out LowendMac.

You could try Ubuntu Studio. I write that because it comes with many, many video/audio codecs and utilities pre-installed. For turning an old iBook into a home theater, it may work for you.

I did a quick search and it appears that Ubuntu Studio is not available for the PPC, which would leave out the OP's iBook.

There is, however, a normal distro of Ubuntu still available for PPC - including the newest version. That being said, I couldn't get it to install on my 500MHz G3...
