hello everyone,

long time reader in this site but just registered,

I'm having storage issues on my imac 24" w/ 500gb drive. the drive has boot camp in vista . I need a bigger storage.
my question, is there a quick way to clone my drive to a new one w/ me going through all the hassle of installing apps and configure settings.

thanks.

Yeah, /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and its Restore function, although I don't know if that will work for the Windows partition. (I think you may have to use a Windows cloning utility for that partition.)

Moving to Alternative Operating Systems where you'll probably get more responses.

Disk Utility will work to clone your Mac partition and restore it. Winclone (runs in OS X) will clone and restore your Windows boot camp-created partition complete with the Windows OS and files.

thanks for the response. so i should get a hdd, connected it via usb. after that, have Disk Utility do the mac partition and then have WinClone do the Windows partition.

btw, a 1.5 tb hdd is supported for imac 3.06ghz 2008?

thanks.

The Winclone app seems to be dead easy to run, are there any issues/tricks/hints I would need to know just in case?.

Thanks.

I don't think Winclone gives a flip where you save your clone image. My 10GB image of my 47+GB Windows partition is in my Documents folder. That was just the default location.

yes, you can clone anywhere. It is fast. Use winclone's compression option though because it saves a lot of space. Once their site comes back up, examine their documentation. Depending on your future uses of the winclone image, there are different options/variables you should consider. The documentation lays it out well.

Thanks for the info. Which is a better option from the compression options shown below under "When cloning NTFS partitions"?

My external USB2 hard disk is NTFS formatted for the sake of compatibility… does that matter?.

I prefer the special compressed image format. It's smaller and restores quickly. I believe that winclone can do more with the special format too, but since the page is still down, I'm working off of my memory.

Here are a couple google caches of important pages.

I started thinking about this this morning, and three's really no reason to need your image to be mountable DMGs, so what Cold Warrior says makes plenty of sense, and faster is always better.

Well, I ran Winclone and it took 12 minutes to clone my Boot Camp hard disc… to my external USB2 hard disk. I guess I can't complain. The app gave me this warning once I had chosen the NTFS formated USB2 hard disk:

I went forward… it is remains to be seen if I'll have issues once I need to restore it but again thanks for all the terrific advice.

How did you write to an NTFS-formatted volume? Do you have MacFUSE installed?

Ah yes, MacFUSE is installed here. My apologies for omitting it in my previous post.
