I've seen a lot about this subject, but I figure I should double check before creating headaches I don't know the solutions to. So I just picked up a used MBP 2.0GHz circa mid-'06. I'm in the process of upgrading it to Leopard, and plan on maxing out the memory to 2gigs from the 1 it currently has. That may not be immediate, though. I have a copy of Adobe CS3 Master for PC, and am hoping to get that up and running until I can afford to go native. I guess my questions range as follows: Memory and model makes me think XP is the way to go as opposed to Vista... am I wrong? Will I be able to run the PC version CS3 without too many problems? Are there any specific issues I'll need to address or look for when dealing with this? Take into account that I currently have no experience with boot camp, and my knowledge of all things PC is pitiful. I'm pretty much learning on the fly. Finally, what's the reasonable extent of gaming capability with this machine using windows?

Vista is still Not Ready For Prime Time as far as I'm concerned, though it's getting better. I would definitely go with XP. I have a Mid-'06 MBP that runs XP very nicely-it's the fastest "PC" I've ever owned! With max RAM it should run CS3 very well.

You wouldn't have any problem running Vista on it. I'd personally recommend giving Vista a shot before resorting to installing XP, but that's just me.

CS3 will run perfectly fine on that hardware. You might want to consider upgrading to CS4 if you use Photoshop a lot - in my experience, Photoshop Extended CS3 has been remarkably unstable (lots of memory problems).

WRT gaming - IIRC, the MBP has a GPU with discrete VRAM - looks like 128MB according to LEM. You shouldn't have problems playing most games, although very demanding games like Crysis will probably require dropping down some of the effects to a reasonable level. Games like WoW and Guild Wars should run without any issues.

And no one else.

XP will work great for you.

I'm just saying...people should give Vista a legitimate try before deciding to go back to XP, if they choose to use Windows at all. It's gotten a terrible reputation because of early issues. It's really not that bad.

Do the Apple hardware drivers provided with Boot Camp work with Vista? I haven't seen anything about it, and I'd think that producing Vista-compatible drivers would be "announcement" material, but not necessarily.

I never had problems with x64 Vista, even before SP1 and x64 windows 7 has been great too. I still have a 32-bit XP partition but I practically never use it. Booting into XP after using Vista for a while feels like booting into OS 9 after using OS X. It's starting to look and feel really dated.

I missed that, darn it. I have a copy of Vista Ultimate on my shelf that I've never even opened because the most powerful hardware I have is my iMac. I wish I'd known about this earlier. My above statements, especially the "not ready for prime time," were based on the poor performance of Macs running Vista with XP drivers. That's not the case anymore, so I withdraw that advice.

Of course if Vista were as affordable as XP, lots more people would be messing with it, improving the reputation of the OS. Heck, if I hadn't been able to get Ultimate dirt cheap through my school, I would never have bought it at all...

You could try calling Adobe and exchange your Windows license for a Mac license. May require you to mail in proof of purchase.
