I am running Fusion 3.1 under MAC OS 10.5.8 (on a late 2008 iMac). Windows XP Pro works very well but at times I need the DOS shell for WordPerfect 5.1. The macro function is terribly slow. I increased the RAM allocation and that helped a little but it's still too slow. So, two questions: 1-has anyone else experienced this and found a solution? 2-has anyone attempted do to this with Parallels, and if so, did it work well? Thanks.

Welcome to our forums!

But I gotta ask, why stick with WP 5.1? I used a PC to convert all my (very!) old WP docs into something that current software can see somewhere around the turn of the century...

But on to your issue. Fusion often handles things very differently from the way the real hardware would, so sometimes things are just plain slow. On the other hand, you could try the (free!) VirtualBox package and see if that ran your DOS programs faster and smoother.

An excellent question. The answer is that I inherited a very extensive set of WP5.1 macros from the person who used to have the job that I have now - hundreds of strings that produce a file with InDesign tags at both the paragraph and character levels. I doubt that I could recreate all the strings and I can't hire someone to do it for me. Thanks for the VirtualBox suggestion. I will try it.

That certainly sounds like a great reason to keep using WP5...

Give VirtualBox a shot-it is free and if it's not any faster, you're only out a little time to mess with trying it.

VirtualBox installed but it doesn't see my Windows installation disk, so I can't do anything with it. I did not have this issue with either Fusion or Parallels. I have been through the user guide but it appears to have been written for people with more extensive backgrounds than mine.

I found VirtualBox to be kind of picky as to when the install disc was inserted. Did you try to insert the disc, THEN start your new VM? That's what I had to do. Otherwise, it was smooth sailing.

Make an ISO of the Windows disc, then try virtualbox with that.

I made the ISO but VirtualBox still does not see that or the original CD. The ISO is currently on the Mac OS desktop. Is there a particular folder where VirtualBox could find it?

Another question. Is there a way to migrate the Fusion files into VirtualBox?

How much RAM did you give your fusion virtual machine?

Have you gone to the Fusion Communities to ask there?

blueboulder: did you present the CD to your Virtualbox VM? Are you aware that you have to do that manually?

I don't understand about the CD. How would I do that?
