Well I searched google, looked all over help sites but like always the obvious question is the hardest to find.

So I will have to resort to sounding like a newbie again and asking here

On linux terminal names seem to go like pts/0 and so on, and other times I see it go up like ttyp0 and up.

My question is, whats the difference!

linux does list ttyp0 and so on in dev even tho it is going up like pts/0

So my question is. What the hell is the difference? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

Terminal emulators like xterm and konsole use pts/0,1,2,3,4 as UNIX98 virtual terminals, same thing two different names.

The real difference is that tty?? must be created with mknod command and they are present in a fixed number, pts/* have no limitations (but one configurable in the kernel config) and are created dinamically as they are needed. pts/ are also safer than ttys.
