How about KDE 3.0 on Mac OS X! Check this : http://fink.sourceforge.net/index.php
I'm running it on my G4 867. It's fairly easy to install for a newbie like me and fun to explore. It appear to be stable and fast enough.

I've been eager to try this over a weekend, but am not sure I want to abandon Aqua for the whole work week. can you install XFree86 and Aqua side by side and then choose one from the console on boot-up? Or is it more of an all-or-nothing conversion that should wait for summer.

installin xdarwin is easy as hell, i got it from apples site, and it gives you the option when you launch it to have it run full screen, or rootless (side by aqua)
takes longer to download the binary then it was to install it

Here is my desktop in Mac OS X with KDE 3. There's lot of thing to learn about the configuration of kde, but it's fun.

By the way, is that available through fink (if I selfupdate-cvs, will it be available)?

Yes, you have to install fink first, then use it to install kde 3 and xfree86. The instructions on the site are very simple. I had no problem and i'm surprise by the stability. The speed is like when i use Mandrake in Virtual PC on the OS 9 side. I run a G4 867, 1.1gb ram.
In Mac OS X, i just click on the XDarwin icon and kde 3 load in about 1 minute or so. I have access to my apps in Mac OS X. I see no difference in the speed on internet (cable) in mozilla or konqueror. Now i'm trying to get my language working in kde. Not easy!
I'm impress by the work of the people that were able to get kde working on Mac OS X.

Yeah, it's cool, runs pretty good. It is avalible through fink, but it's still an "unstable" build. I'm running it on a Ti800.
Here ya go.

I'm not really excited to install bundle-kde, as the fink site said it took over 24 hours to compile on his 800mhz G4 with 640 RAM... I'm running on a Pismo 400 with 384 RAM.
Which package did you guys install, bundle-kde or kde3base?

Just get the binary use apt-get install bundle-kde
It's precompiled and only took about an 45 mins to install, most of that d/l time since it's 339 mb of packages.

you have to have the latest build of Xfree86-base, and rootless from Fink, and only fink, they have extra libraries enabled to run KDE.
