Hi there

I have bought Yellow Dog Linux as this was recommended to me as a good beginners choice. As I am an impatient guy I have also downloaded the install disk disc image they provide . I am installing onto a 500mgh snow iMac with 256 mgs of ram and three partitions. The top partition is 15gb and free space, partition 2 is 2gb for OS9 and called "Macintosh HD", partition 3 is 7gb for OSX and stuff.

I was under the impression that the disc image I downloaded just needed to be copied onto a CD to be bootable. This appears not to be the case. The next thing I did was to copy the content of the "install" folder onto a seperate CD and tried that - no joy. I booted my Mac into firmware and typed at the prompt:

cd:,//yaboot [enter]

the Mac replied:

yaboot unknown word

So, I know this is probably an insanely stupid question, where does that leave me? Do I need to do anything to the downloaded disc imagee when copying it to CD to make it bootable?Like bless it? Am I missing ssomething really vital? I could just wait for my install CD to arrive in the mail but as I've said above, I am impatient.

Thanks.

As you said, it's a disc image. So all you'll have to do is to burn it with Toast as Disc Image.

You could also use OS X's Disc Copy to burn the image. What you did was the equivalent of copying a stuffit archive to a disc and expecting to see all the files.

I didn't just copy the disc image, I used Toast 5 to mount the image and burned the mounted disc. What that means is that my download appeared as a CD symbol on my desktop before I went ahead and burned it.

Still no luck in booting off it.

Mounting bootable disc images sometimes corrupts them (meaning that even if you burned it the correct way after mounting it it wouldn't work).

What you need to do is redownload the image from the server and this time DON'T MOUNT IT! Instead use Toast and click and hold on other and a menu will come up. Select Disc Image from the menu. That is the only way it will work.

In X you can use Disk Copy. Just open up Disk Copy and select Burn Image from the Image menu.

SInce you have OS X, I really recommend you use OS X's Disk Copy utility to burn the image to CD. Disk Copy will not monkey with the image at all, while Toast has been known to.
