A colleague of mine at work (whom I consider to be a real *nix guru) is thinking about getting a new iBook - but wants to run Linux on it.

I don't think he's that picky which distro - (though he's the one who helped me get setup with Debian on a X86 laptop and sold me on the wonders of apt-get)

Anybody have any luck doing this? If so, how's sound, video, airport support, etc. so far? I've searched the macnn forums and the comp.os.linux.portable and comp.os.linux.powerpc newsgroups but I'm not coming up with anything. Yes, I know - it's a very new machine.

I'm just happy he's considering a Mac

I bought a new ibook in the first month it came out and I tried all known distros, Debian, Linux PPC, SuSe, Mandrake and YDL 2.0 to see if I could get one to work. And to my amazement, only one of them would even boot off an install cd, Yellow Dog Linux 2.0. Even then it would have video problems. It would overlap the top of the screen to the bottom and would only run at 800x600. Then I read the manual and saw "NO SOUND SUPPORT ON NEW 2001 IBOOK" I'm sorry, but I don't want an os that I can listen to music on or play games that require sound. Oh wait I'm sorry, there are no games for ppc linux. Anyways maybe you're friend will have more luck, but if I were him just use os x and use xfree86, darwin ain't so bad

Apparently you can use USB sound with the iBook. So if you have an iMic, it will allow you to have sound on Linux.

I just installed YDL2 on my dual USB iBook, and it couldn't have been easier. Everything works except for sound (apparently it doesn't work on any of the iBooks). Airport does works.

As for the video problems hew mentioned - during the install it lets you choose resolutions for X windows. I unchecked all but 1024x768, and video is perfect.

Check out YDL's site, it's pretty informative.
