...is out and I'm downloading the two cds as im typing this. What kind of performance can I expect on a Powerbook G3 333MHz with 192MB of RAM? I've got OS X Server 10 installed on it right now but it's running too slow GUI-wise for me to handle. Icky ick.
Thought I'd try out Mandrake, I like the way you can configure your desktop's look. Make it like Aqua or even Windows XP
Anyone know how it'll run on my PB? Is Mandrake the way to go? I want KDE 2.1.2.

Have you installed it yet?
I'm considering installing Mandrake 8 on my 9.1 partition once the DVD Player comes out for OS X. But I'm concerned about the way Linux partitions the drive. That, and I still want to be able to use OS X as my primary OS. That's why I bought a Mac. But I figure it can't hurt to know Linux these days.

Using Toast 5.0.1, how the heck do I burn the iso file correctly?
Should I create a toast disc image first out of the iso or?
Never burn iso files really. Good start aye?

I decided to copy the iso file to a windows pc and extract the file using isobuster. When done I copied the folder with all the items in it back to the Mac. Then burning the folder as HFS+ CD . It should boot but it doesnt, not even in open firmware mode typing boot cd:/yaboot. Obviously I cannot check "Bootable" as there's no System Folder on the CD.

Uhm okay now I selected the iso file in Toast 501 and chose Mount and two items appeared on the desktop, "Cooker_CD_1" and "Linux-Mandrake". The latter one actually contains a modified system folder. Will try dragging that one into the Data section (of toast) and burn it as HFS+ tomorrow...im too tired now, its 4 AM soon.
Think I got it solved, WTG ME

You shouldn't need to mount the disc image at all - I don't think that dragging data from a mounted disc image into Toast will work. Instead, you should choose "Disc Image" from the pull down menu in toast, then drag the ISO disc image onto the toast window... then burn.
(I think that will work)

I tried that twice, didnt work out very well. When opening the cd in os 9 there was only one file in it, mandrake.iso. Shouldnt Toast extract the iso file as it burns it? When I tried mounting the iso yesterday an item appeared on the desktop named LInux Mandrake, it looked good and contained a modified system folder kind of thing and yaboot.conf and all the other stuff. Will try burn that way once, as hfs+ too (read on mandrake forum that its important burning it as hfs+ and not iso hybrid).
Will get back to y'all lateron.

Hi !
I downloaded it too. I burned it with Toast 5, and I checked if both partitions are on the CD. So, I have the HFS+ one and the ext2fs one. So I tried to boot on it hiting 'c' on startup (because I can't select it from the finder) and it doesn't work. I only get a grey screen. If one of you find the solution...
thanks

have you tried an open firmware boot? option-command-o-f and then typ boot cd yaboot at the prompt and hit enter.
How did you get it to burn correctly using toast 5?? I had to extract the iso file on my pc and copy the folder back and then burn as hfs+/disc image. God I hate linux installations........

How do I set up the partitions the right way? I got a little into the installation process but it said No when I was about to pick the drive of which to install mandrake on. Wrong/bad file format.
Couldnt use pdisk after have booted with the cd either so what's up?
No wonder linux doesnt make it to the desktops...

ok, T tried booting with alt-command-o-f, and I wrote 'boot cd boot\yaboot'
It worked fine and I came into the installer. Thanks !
I have an error durind the installation, but I think it's because I have no partition with free space.
Pdisk doesn't work on my newworld G4, and I have two HD (40 Go and 20Go)
on the first one, I have two HFS+ partitions of 20 Go with MacOS 9 on the first one. One the second HD, I have an HFS+ partition with MacOS X.
I don't know how to delete the second partition of my first HD. I'll try from OS X.
See You

Hi All
If you haven't solved the ISO problem your having, I hope this will help.
You never mount ISO via Toast on the Desktop of Mac OS. This causes the blessed folder of the mounted image to be un-bless making a non-bootable burnt CD.
If I do remember only Toast Deluxe have the option to burn ISO. So you have an option of burning the ISO from a PC with Nero or purchase Toast Deluxe.
If you need help just email me, maybe I can help you.

Hi Folks,,,
Incase anyone is still having trouble I have had no problems with Mandrake
*yet* on my Pismo 500 256MB.
Downloaded ISO's and hidozage noted never mount iso's in Toast to the desktop.
In Toast select "Disk Image" and drag the iso to Toast and then burn.
When booting the CD and yaboot loaded I chose "install-aty128fb" instead of the default "install" as this worked better for my Pismo.
I too had troubles with the partitioning. I made my partitions in pdisk first and the booted the installer. When it approached the file system portion it kept complaining about the bootstrap not being there even though I made one as per the instructions. What I did that worked was deleted my linux partitions to empty space and then let the file system portion of the installer create what it required automatically. (I can't remember off hand what i selected there but it worked). This is a little risky as you might lose your HFS partitions so if you try this method it aint my fault.....
I couldn't get XFree 4.03 (??) to work but the XPmac does work.
The rest oof the install was easy and by far the best Linuxppc installer yet I've tried. Though I have not tried YDL 2 yet.
I'll be re-installing later today as I broke it already digging into things. I'll post if I stumble onto anything of interest.
A few good Mandrake sites too are: http://www.mandrakeuser.org http://www.mandrakeforum.com/
Cheers.
