I am buying a big hard drive soon, and I'll definitely want to try out Linux on my Mac, but which distribution is the best? I am aware of LinuxPPC and Mandrake.
Also, I'll be partitioning my hard drive into separte volumes for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Win2000 on VPC, and Linux. Is it possbile for Linux to coexist on the same disk but on a different partion? If I want this type of set up, which OS should I install first? I don't want to deal with disk formatting problems.
Any help is appreciated.

no you could use any distro
i have the same sort of setup on my imac
but i use linuxppc(going to try yellow dog one of these days)
but it is kinda a pain to boot between
i can boot into linux with yaboot on the classic(os9) partition or use startup disk to start with osx
but i want something to choose between either 3 at startup
i know there must be something...somewhere

I really recommend SuSE 7.1. It is fairly recent (NB 7.2 will be coming out fairly soon), easy to install/update and it comes with 6 cds of software ideal for the Linux newbie :-)

smic, I have linuxppc, os9.1, and osx on my G4, and I used ybin/yaboot, to boot into either 3 at startup, or restart, it's actually pretty cool, I don't have to bother with the startup disk control panel any more. Here is a link with more info http://linuxppc.org/hardware/blueg3/....php3?css_ok=1

on your g4 i think you also have that cool option-hold down trick to choose the bootup volume, which i think is cool but i dont know if it works with linux
just have to wait, to see i guess

don't wave off mandrake - mandrake is known for having one of the easiest installs on the i586 architecture. they've now got a mac release - yes, they're calling it "beta" - but that has more to do with their finalizing their 'value-added' features and extra cds. the OS and slick installer installer (and the use of the Nautilus desktop environment!! created by mac guys!!) are ready to go.
my vote is for mandrake.
