I know that there is a tribes 2 port for linux... will this work in linuxppc?

I really want to play this game, and I don't know if there is any way to play it on my mac.

Nope. But it shouldn't be too hard to port it. In fact, it might be as simple as just recompiling (I really, really, *really* doubt it's that simple, but it *could* be). Since OS X can run XWindows, it might not be that hard to do a Mac OS X port either.

It would just be an issue of recompiling -- LinuxPPC is Linux! (Linux for Intel is properly called Linux/386, just as most of our Linuxes are Linux/MacPPC.)

bringing this to the top again!

Is there any way to recompile it yourself? If there is not source code released, reverse engineer it for your own use? The source is probably released, as its linux, and you need to change it for different distros/ui's

would this work in madrake 8 ppc?

That would be very cool!!! cause if it can be ported to LinuxPPC than theres a chance it can be run on OS X.

it would be cool. If it wouldn't be ported to osx (osx is bsd, not linux), then I'd happily do a minimal install of mandrake to play it. does it just require a linux, or a xwindow system?

ok, heres the question-

Does Tribes2 for Linux come in source code form?

This would be useful for different distrobutions of linux (caldera, redhat, mandrake, slackware), and for different windowing systems (kde, blackbox etc).

I'm just reading the reviews. heres a quote "I installed Tribes 2 using Loki's nifty, and rather cool Open Source setup program." requires "XFree86-3.3.5 or higher". Does this mean that tribes is opensource (recompilable), and used a windowing system already available to macosx?

Please keep this topic alive. it seems possible we will be running this game

Loki doesn't give out the source code to its ports. It is a commercial venture attempting to bring gaming to the linux platform. It uses a proprietary installer to get the software to your machine.

It sounds doable, but they will have to do the porting. Recently I heard they were not doing well because of lack of income due to slow sales. It seems difficult to maintain a viable commercial model of software on a system where people are used to downloading and installing software for free themselves.

But, PLEASE support Loki if you do want to see more games brought to the Linux platform!

I will support loki if they support me (i will buy it if they port it to ppc).

I guess now the topic turns into "how to get it to work". Is there any way to decompile->recompile the exectutables without the source code? any way to get it out from the installer? any linux trick?

I realize that people won't like ideas like that, but it would only be a temporary fix so that we could actually play the game on a mac. I mean how hard, really, could it possibly become for sierra/loki to recompile it for ppc mandrake/linuxppc/etc.? It doesn't seem like we will ever be seeing this specific game on the mac, only engine derivitives. like "robotic", i really want to play this game.

Ask them to port it. Porting involves the cooperation of the vendor. If it or games from that developer are already available for Linux, then we're all a bit further to getting Tribes2.

Reverse engineering is *not* an easy task for most things. With the source code, it could be done without too much trouble. Here's hoping it comes to PPC!

ok, I guess trying to get it to work is out of the question. No then, How would we get loki to recompile it for a ppc linux? I realize that its probably just in the hands of sierra (or was it dynamix?), but I'm sure loki could ask (it might boost sales to mac users desperate to play this game). It would require little effort to recompile, and all they would need to do is release an application which could install and compile the files on the cd.
