I read that MKLinux R1 has "full" support for the Powerbook 5300. (preview releases would run, but you had to install in SCSI Disk mode off another Mac.)

I run the installer, and it says that it can not find the Bootstrap.conf file. Sure enough, it's looking in the correct place (rootdev=/dev/scd0) My External CD is ID 0. I guess it _doesnt'_ have support for the external SCSI on the 5300.

Can anyone make a suggestion? Does it? Doesn't it?

Thanks,
GregM.

That's assuming MkLinux has support for 5300 networking. I know that it doesn't support the ethernet card in my 1400.

P.S If anyone knows how to get ethernet in MkLinux in a 1400, please please please tell me!

I too would love to hear about the status of MkLinux. For example does it have PCMCIA support yet so I might use my WaveLAN card in it?

Thanks for the replys guys! I really thought that the Linux forum was dead on Macnn boards. I love OS X, but since it (darwin) doesn't support the 5300, I had to go with Linux.

The closest I've gotten it to install is using SCSI Disk mode on my 7500. But I could never seem to edit the appropriate file correctly to make it look at the ata bus for the boot volume, not the scsi bus.

I thought I'd try the final R1 release because it was supposed to support the external scsi port. Apparently, not; or the build I d/l was screwed up.

If that's the case, who knows a reliable site to d/l an R1 image? Also, I burned the image in OS X using Disk Copy's "burn image". Could that have caused any problems?

Thanks,
GregM.

Most of the mirror site listed on mklinux.org are pretty reliable. Burning in OS X shouldn't cause a problem, it must be something out.

I don't think the DiskCopy program is capable of the multisession HFS/EXT2 format CDs. I'm not positive that the R1 disk is like that, but many Linux install CDs are set up like that. So if you mount them you don't see all the information.

It sounds like you didn't mount it and then burn a disk, but I have only the experience of burning with Toast (which I can attest works flawlessly).

Hope this helps some, otherwise get the utility only from the site and the bootkernel with install image. Then you can install it over the internet via FTP. Hopefully you've got another machine online to look up the instructions while you do it. Good luck! MkLinux is a bit long in the tooth, but you should be able to get a usable system out of it. Try and be sure to compile the sources for updated packages when you have the chance (most importantly the mail apps like sendmail and other known-to-be-vulnerable applications).
