As far as I know, only MkLinux will run on a Nu-Bus PowerMac... I know LinuxPPC is PCI only, I believe Yellow-Dog is also. Not certain about Debian or SuSe (my guess is SuSe is PCI based as well). Anyone else?

I think the only options are Debian or Mk. Everything else needs a PCI Mac. However, don't forget about NetBSD, as they have a distro that will run on the Mighty SE/30! What fun that is!
I got Debian to install successfully only once, I think, and could never manage to D/L a working MKLinux image..

I've run MkLinux DR3 on a 6100, and it was quite unstable. Mind you that MkLinux has not been updated in years. I looked at Debian's site and could not find any mention of whether NuBus Macs were supported or not.
On that hardware, I'd stick with MacOS-based software, if I were you.

I had MkLinux running on my 6100 in late 1994 (it was the developer release 2?). It was amazing to see a 'real' unix running on that hardware; boy was it a pain to install.
Since then I've heard there are experimental kernels for the nubus macs that let you install YellowDog and LinuxPPC. Although I have never gotten the installers to work properly, I'm still interested in trying to get Linux running on an older 7100 I have. It would be great as a secondary server (and light use). The video on these machines are really substandard by most people's standards today. If you wanted to run X-windows on it, keeping it in 8bit (256 color) would help a lot.
Good luck and let me know if you get it working (I've tried a few times, but not as agressively as I have to get OSX on my 7600, which i DID!).
Some useful links follow: http://www.linuxppc.com/about/hardwa...supported.php3
http://www.mklinux.org/
http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/suppor...hardware.shtml
ftp://ftp.linuxppc.org/linuxppc-2000...nux%20Kernels/
Some of these links seem to think you can't get it running on nubus hardware. The last link is to a nubus kernel. NOTE: YOU WILL NEED A DIFFERENT INSTALLER than the standard that comes with most distributions. There is really a really incomplete open firmware in these older machines and the installers and boot processes need to all be customized. You should be able to do some searching to find a Linux booter (MkLinux, or BootX ) that has been modified to start the boot process.
Post back to this forum if you get anything working!

At the Barnes and Noble last night I came across a book I had seen there before. It was in the Linux section and was MKLinux. It is an Apple book I believe and is just sitting on the shelf. It comes with 2 cd's and I figure a book of instructions, I hate to leave it there, owning 2 6100's myself, but I think next I will try NetBSD on a 7300. If anyone should want me to pick up this book let me know.

skeedog98,
You can get OSX running on your 7300! But I wouldn't suggest doing so unless you have a 200mHz604e or greater (a G3/G4 upgrade!)
i just got it installed last week and it runs really well with a G3/400mHz and 168MB RAM. It wouldn't win speed races, but its useable and doesn't feel pokey. Its actually quite nice. If you're intereseted do a search for "OldWorld" in this forum. Ryan Rempel has put together a disk image with instructions and the patches necessary to get OSX to install on your class of machine.
OTOH, it would be nice to have just a CLI. You might try using Darwin alone (free download from Apple)!
