Has anyone had any success installing Mandrake 8 on a rev. A iBook? I have no problem booting from the CD, and can even make it part way through the install process, but invariably the installer crashes after I select which keys I want to use to emulate second and third clicks. I either get a hard freeze--the point stops moving--or I get a freeze and the iBook actuallu powers down. I've tried installing in text mode, expert, recommended...nothing prevents the strange crash. Anyone had any luck in this area?

I tried installing Mandrake 8.0 on my B+W G3, 350 MHz, 640 MB RAM. I managed to get the install to work, but when I boot into the system, it freezes within a minute or so of starting to work. I've reinstalled with different setting three times, but I still can't use the system,

I have installed both Yellow Dog and Mandrake 8 on my iBook 366 without much problems. only issue I had was that the screen res for X Windows was misconfigured (1024x768 which the iBook does not support).

If at all possible use the text-based installer and text-based login so you can change the settings from the prompt (and you can still start X from the command line). I found the Mandrake installer to be better than the Yellow Dog one (they're also different "flavors" of linux).

I will post a link to a decent installation guide here and in the sister thread (B&W G3) once I find it again. I followed it and was successful that way.

Even though this for YDL it is quite comprehensive and I used this to setup Mandrake 8 on my iBook.

The Mandrake installer is pretty similar to YDLs (it does have a better way to select which components to install).

Note: YDL worked on my iBook 366 even it is *explicitly* not supported on YDLs website. Mandrake supports my iBook, but as I said, setup the wrong res for the iBook screen.

I selected standard settings for the mouse and found that I did not actually need the other two Unix-style mouse buttons that much.
