Howdy. I've got linuxppc on my pismo (PB w/ bronze keyboard and firewire) and am having some problems. It took me days to get this thing installed, and now I'm pretty disappointed with it. Many of the built in apps don't run b/c they're missing libraries, etc, and it won't do 24bit color at 1024x768 (only recognizes 768kb of vram). Any suggestions on how to at least get video working properly?

Thanks,
Justin

Well, I hate to tell ya, but, LinuxPPC 2000 (1st quarter is the one i use/have right now), HATES New World ROM machines... It runs well on older g3s (beige) and g3PBs.... but, pismos, it doesnt like...

I'd go for an alternative like.... Yellow Dog Linux, or SuSE (I haven't personally tried this, but some like it). If you KNOW linux, then go with debian.. (www.debian.org), but, if you're a Linux Newbie, go with Yellow Dog, SuSE or LinuxPPC...
*Rambles on nonsensically* Sorry, I probably made no sense... but im tired...

Ciao!

And for video issues, well, i also have video issues with my Beige g3 (266MHz) It works GREAT with the factory installed 2 meg Rage Fury Pro... but, I'd like to use my Rage Orion. The only way this was possible, was to check "No Video Driver" in BootX (the screen that prompts you for your OS of choice at boot.) Linux should then default to the same resolution and bit-depth. There should be some info on getting your video to work, and tons of other stuff over at Http://www.linuxppc.org.

I only got 24-bit color on a pismo after installing a 2.4 kernel. Then, suddenly, I also could change screen brightness with function keys and my usb mouse started working (I am running Debian Woody).

I think it has something to do with older kernels not understanding very well the pismo version of open firmware. I understand that OF needs to be accessed for video settings. If you try to use Debian on a powerbook, check out www.dcs.qmw.ac.uk/~sb/First-Aid/ It contains, besides a lot of useful information, also a precompiled kernel for Debian and the corresponding config file.
