Has anyone successfully installed Mandrake 8.0 on a B+W G3? I installed it on my G3, but it freezes up within a minute after booting. I've tried re-installing with different options, but every time, the same results.

It's a shame, because it was looking promising. I was able to use my Epson Stylus Photo 750 (not usable under OS X 10.1) and I was at last able to set up a proper boot partition (which I couldn't do under SuSE 6.4.

I have a standard B+W G3 350MHz with 640 MB RAM.

I had a somewhat similar experience, except I wasn't able to finish the install. I was moving along through the installer pretty well, but then the colors on the screen inverted and the mouse froze. I reset, but got a folder with a broken computer on it (not the flashing question mark). I eventually had to do a hardware reset in Open Firmware and pull the PRAM battery from the motherboard for a few minutes before I could boot up and wipe the drive. (This is a G3 B&W 400 DVD, 192 MB RAM.)

I've tried installing Mandrake 8 PPC on several machines, and haven't succeeded on a single one of them. Maybe it's best to wait for the next update. The support just doesn't seem to be there yet.

I've had good success installing Mandrake 8 on my iBook. Only problem was the wrong screen resolution that the installer set for X windows.

Also had good experience with Yellow Dog Linux. Mandrake installer is better though.

TIP: Use the text-based installer. Usually the graphic setup is not supported by the installer and needs to be configured once Linux is installed.

Mandrake 8 is actually one of the best linux distros I've used and installed. keep in mind that linux is *not* designed to be user-friendly but modular and stable.
