I got my copy of Yellow Dog Linux 2.3 in the mail friday. it is the easiest Linux install and setup I have ever seen.
I installed it on a Powerbase 200 with a 220 G3 upgrade. this thing is wicked fast. It occasionally slows down, but it easily outpaces MacOS 10.1.5 on my 500 iBook 2001. I am going to keep OS X on my iBook, but my 8600 may see a Linux install soon.
Linux still has a few problems with its GUI...and it is getting much closer to primetime. if they fix the rough edges it will give OSX and Windows a run for its money. The YDL site says it all "Did OSX put your mac to sleep?"
YDL is a serious wake up call!

I installed YDL 2.3 on a machine recently too, and I must disagree by saying that I haven't seen a Linux GUI (including the default window manager in YDL) that are anywhere close to being ready for prime time (i.e. your Grandma can operate it).

yep, wish someone could port Aqua to Linux.
Apple would be on top of that like white on rice.

I have seen pics of YDL running what looked to be Aqua style windows.
All of the colors and widgets are included in the "Liquid" theme, but I can not find a way to make the window title bars look like Aqua windows.

My only beefs with YDL is the fact they are trying to Windowize it with the browser (Konqueror or Nautilus) be the web browser and file browser.
I like KDE better overall, but I find myself using GNOME alot because its Nautilus browser is much faster than KDE's Conqueror.
Also I hate hate hate having to edit config files. Had to edit the /etc/fstab file to make the computer mount my HFS drive.

AS I said, not ready for primetime, but it is well on the way. OS X is still the best out there. But, on an old machine like the one I have it on...Linux is the way to go.

If you don't like editing config files and messing around with a bunch of command line utils, consider downloading and installing webmin. (in YDL, apt-get install webmin ) and set it to block all requests that aren't from localhost so you don't get hacked. It provides a nice interface for doing a lot of things (like editing mount points.)

2.3 tis cool, but has some rough edges. I still find myself having to fsck it a bit. I have been using KDE so I am going to go back to gnome to see if KDE is the problem.

I have tried the other distros, but YDL is where its at.

apt-get is what kept me from jumping to Debian. Way to go YDL!
