Does anyone have known-problem/solution tips on how to install
SuSE PPC 7.1 on my new iBook 600 ?

I allready prepared it a bit when I bought my iBook, by making a
3 gig Unix partition (for "root") and a 32 MB HFS paartition for "boot".
But I wonder if someone tried to install it before and can give me any advice how to make the best install, etc.
(I have OSX and 9.2.2 running on seperate peartitions also...)

Thanx,

Carolus

SuSE Linux PPC 7.3 is really sooooo much better, especially regarding USB, installation and compatibility - if you can, you should use this latest distribution...

The "standard" SuSE PPC partitioning scheme is something like this (see the manual): an HFS+ partition for your Mac OS X/9 (or two partitions, if you want to keep them separated), an HFS (*not* HFS+, at this stage, even if HFS+ support under Linux is being actively developed: see, BTW, the new "kio-mac" KDE/Konqueror-compatible HFS+ KIOSlave on http://www.penguinppc.org or http://www.linuxppc.org, for example...) boot partition (~ 32 MB), a Linux /swap partition (A/UX Swap, ~ 128 MB), and finally the main Linux / (root) partition (A/UX Root, with a size of your choice: at least 2 GB, IMO).

But, as I said before, it would be much better to buy the 7.3 version, as it has much less problems...

Thanx for the tip....only, I allready have full version 7.1;
Anyone know if there's an update to 7.3, and is it good to install 7.1 first then ?

PS: I indeed made 3 extra partitions for linux:
SuseBoot (32 MB HFS); LinuxSwap (128 MB A/UX)
and LinuxRoot (3,2 gig A/UX);
besides my OS 9.2.2 and 10.1.2 partitions.

Maybe installing a basic 7.1 from the CD's I have to get it working,
and then dowloading an update to 7.3 ???
(and afterwards installing the additional packages).

I would like to try 7.1 first, since I have it at hand ;-)

cheers,Caro

Well - definitely try installing 7.1 - *if* it works with your new iBook - and update from SuSE's servers, then...

But, personally, I had one *big* problem with 7.1: ADSL didn't work - and updating with a 56K modem may be a major problem, as the files may be quite big.

On the other hand, if you have ADSL/cable and succeed in getting them to work, it shouldn't be difficult to upgrade...

Thanks so far ;-)

I tried to install SuSE PPC 7.1 from the Disk-1 on my iBook, but
it was :
- not bootable (should be according to SuSE...)
- did copy the SuSE bootfolder to my HFS-bootpartition
(even fixed the vmlinux thing by renaming the vmlinux 2.4 to vmlinux),
but although it appeared in the startup disk prefs, selecting it as startup did not result in booting either (OS X just plainly stepped in itself).
- onather try: booting with option : did only show my OSX and OS9 partitions as startup volumes.
- Last effort : booting in OS9, and doubleclicking the bootX app in the SuSE boot-folder (on the bootpartition as well as on the CD) >>>
this gave me a black screen ..

So, MAYBE this last try to boot the installer was the closest, and maybe one of you
knows the right kernel arguments to set in bootX to fix the black screen;
like any specific video-arguments for a 12" iBook screen ???

Thanks for any help, cheers

Sven,

I find SuSE's site confusing and leads me in circles -- I too would like to upgrade from 7.1 to 7.3 -- but am not finding the process easy to get started -- any clear pointers would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

I've never tried a system upgrade - but the SuSE Linux manual is much clearer than the web site: in the chapter on updates, etc. it says that you must boot from the update CD into linuxrc and then use YaST2 or YaST to update the system.

Updating over the Internet seems to be rather complicated, indeed: try to read the pages on installation via FTP, anyway (SuSE, AFAIK, don't give you the opportunity to download ISO CD images - a real pity!)...

(Probably, the best thing would be to wait for SuSE 8.0 PPC, which will include KDE 3 and other great new features.)
